Post Conviction Relief (PCR)

Post Conviction Relief (PCR)

Once a defendant is convicted, he or she has three options in
contesting the conviction. A defendant may appeal to the Appellate
Division of Superior Court, file a petition for post-conviction relief19
or make a motion for a new trial.

PCR petitions are screened by law clerks pursuant to a new procedure
and policy implemented in 2001. True PCR petitions received in
Essex Vicinage are forwarded to the PCR unit of the Public
Defenders
